Romain Erkiletlian

(1972), France

Romain Erkiletlian was born in 1972 in France and currently lives in Tokyo where he works. For several years, he has created a series of works closely linked to each other, mainly addressing the urban territory that he is restructuring to take control of it. This process is articulated through photo-collages retouched with paint, large murals/installations, drawings and even videos. His artistic exploration focuses on spaces, cool monsters, connectivity and signals. He examines the connection between upper and lower spaces through paintings, drawings and sculptures. For several years, Erkiletlian has been creating works that offer a unique vision of the urban landscape, using a faceted, clean point of view and a limited color palette. Each work reflects the chaos and energy of cultural perceptions of utopia and dystopia. His creations are part of a distinctive POP universe, influenced by science fiction from the 60s to 80s, comics and Japanese monsters. This chic cyberpop universe is marked by central themes like mystery, identity and destiny, with the presence of unknown and friendly creatures traveling through particular spaces, filled with color and light. Vibrant light, graphic details and shimmering colors characterize his work, creating mysterious and poetic scenes that exude mesmerizing energy and positivity. Romain Erkiletlian's sculptures establish a link between space and Earth, enriching his entire work with a mixture of the organic and the mineral, with ultra-nuanced shapes, textures and colors. His work is moving and hypnotic, offering a particular sensory experience that transports the viewer. The works of Romain Erkiletlian are part of the collection of the Mori Museum in Tokyo, Japan. He has also had notable solo exhibitions such as "Commission of 4 concert videos by SONA (Symphonia of North Arkansas)" in the United States in 2021, "Majestic X" at Galerie Sator in Paris in 2017 and "Photostructures" at LipanjePuntin Artecontemporanea in Rome in 2008.
