Gabriela Medina

(1961), Venezuela

My work is a universe woven with threads of hope, uprooting and union. My collage technique becomes a bridge between the past and the present, uniting textures, colors and shapes that evoke moments and spaces lived, amalgamating the fragments of my life with the deepest emotions. It all started when I emigrated to other latitudes and found a refuge of inspiration in Paris. I transformed women from diverse cultures into iconic figures, clad in the architecture and details of this eternal city. In each of them, I saw myself reflected, protected by the armor that Paris offered me, merging the illusion and relief of arrival with the melancholy of departure. These women intertwine with the spaces and walls that I build, formed of multiple sofas which keep words, sentences and messages which, although degraded by time, leave an indelible mark. These prints become my brushstrokes, where I paint with photographs and mixed feelings. Sometimes forests of bare trees complement these landscapes, offering a faint but lingering light of hope. I evoke vast spaces and forgotten places, where the sphere becomes a recurring symbol, representing the way in which I had to integrate multiplicity as the protagonist of my adaptation, as well as the light passage of my thoughts and emotions through these lands . abandoned. Each sphere is a spark of life in the midst of uprooting, a promise of light in the immensity of oblivion. From Caracas to Paris, I create memories, multiple images aspiring to peace. My art is a constant quest for union, an attempt to weave together the scattered fragments of existence and transform them into a work that speaks of universal feelings. It is a journey of life, where each collage is a window into hope, illusion and the eternal search for a home in the heart.
